Pangolins scales are used in some native medicines. For example, squirrels are four legged mammals with tails and they are exceptional climbers. If you think about it, lots of four legged mammals with tails are good climbers. Another interesting fact about giant pangolins is that giant pangolins are good climbers. When threatened, a giant pangolin will do one or more or all of the following: spraying a foul smelling liquid on the attacker, peeing on the attacker, or rolling up into a ball and whacking the attacker with its tail. Giant pangolins have many ways to defend themselves. It is rare for a male, female and baby giant pangolin all to be in the same burrow. After that, the pangolin moves on and lives by itself. Then the baby rides around on the mother's tail for around three to four months. Instead, it scrambles around on its belly. The newborn has soft scales and can't walk yet. Females will carry a developing baby around 140 days before having a single baby. Not much is known about the reproduction of giant pangolins. Occasionally, an adult will be seen with a youth, but that is only for the first three to four months when the baby pangolin is nursing. To keep balance when walking on its rear legs, the giant pangolin uses its tail. A giant pangolin may eat up to 200,000 insects a night! To protect its foreclaws, a giant pangolin walks on its wrists or rear legs. Then the giant pangolin sticks its long, sticky tongue into the opening and grabs the inhabitants and eats them. The giant pangolin rears up and puts its weight on its tail, then it thrusts its powerful foreclaws into the anthill or termite mound, breaking it up and opening a hole in the mound or hill. When a giant pangolin comes across an anthill or termite mound it digs right in, literally. Normally, ants and termites are part of dinner. When the sun goes down, the giant pangolin comes out of hiding and begins its search for food. Giant pangolins spend daylight hours hidden under plant debris and brush. This is the only hair that giant pangolins have. Surprisingly, the giant pangolin has eyelashes. They also use their short, powerful front claws for getting food. Instead, they use the hard lining of their stomachs to grind their food. They use this tongue to get their meals from anthills and termite mounds. They also have a very long snout that has a tongue up to 26 in.
